Thoughts on Typography and Layout - Publication Design

This publication design was completed for a university assignment in which typographic and layout design was explored to create a refined outcome. The intended audience is designers who hold an interest in typographic and publication layout design. Four essays were provided as the body text and a layout design was to be created with these essays as inspiration.
The Crystal Goblet layout is simple and traditional. The single column and moderate line length was used as a means to not distract the reader from the text - this is a direct reflection of Beatrice Warde's theory on typography.
The Grid Systems layout is very structured and follows a strict grid. The use of white space creates a strong layout, therefore reflecting the text within that demands order and critical thinking.
The Science of Typography layout reflects that of website design, with the text being organised in a simple, yet organised manner. This is effective for text that will be displayed on-screen as it is readable and easily accessible.
Typography as Discourse is presented with an irregular rhythm. The text is still highly readable, however, which space and small bodies of text creates interest and an element of surprise for the reader. This layout provides a more organic and meaningful experience, which strongly reflects the message behind this essay.
This publication assignment has been extremely beneficial to my career plan, as I have further developed my skills in page layout design and typography. I have demonstrated my ability to effectively create layouts for bodies of text in applicable and dynamic ways. I can apply these skills to all future projects and continue to hone these skills. The skills I have developed through undertaking this project has broadened my skill set and enriched my portfolio.
